How to Choose a Cricut Machine

I have always loved the Cricut machines.  I used to use them to cut out paper letters when I was madly scrapbooking to record my children's every move when they were growing up.  It was a way to cut out headings for the pages in a scrapbook.  Now, I basically use my Cricut Explore Air 2 to personalize gifts and t-shirts using vinyl and iron-on.  Part II of my personalized gifts article will explain step by step how to make personalized gifts for some more crafting helpful hints.

How to choose the right machine for your crafting needs

I have owned many Cricut machines over the years but thought it is time to upgrade my paper cutting technology that will interface with my computer.    Now which one to buy…..Cricut Explore, Cricut Explore Air, Cricut Explore Air 2 or Cricut Maker?

After a little research it basically depends on what you will be crafting and/or sewing, whether or not bluetooth necessary, how fast you need it to cut and the material your cutting.

According to Provo Craft, the only difference is the Cricut Explore Air has built-in wireless capabilities. The Cricut Explore does have bluetooth capabilities, but an adapter must be purchased separately. The main added feature on the Cricut Explore Air 2 is its capability to cut and write 2x faster.

What are the advantages of going wireless?

If you're wondering if you should go wireless with the Cricut Explore, there are a couple advantages. For one, it means less wires and greater portability. Have you wanted to move the machine but the cord wasn’t long enough? Or put the machine on a shelf? Or even have the machine be in the next room over? Well, that’s what you can do with wireless.

Another awesome thing you can do with the wireless Bluetooth is use it with your iPad (iPad 2 and newer). And, according to Provo Craft, they are working hard to create an app for Android users as well.

Just when I thought I had a handle on which Cricut to purchase, Provo Craft introduced the Cricut Maker.

This Cricut Maker is perfect for quilters and people who wish they could sew better but get bogged down by all the details.  Cricut Maker is ideal for anyone who has wanted to cut more with the Cricut, for example, balsa wood, thick chipboard and more. This blade has been developed to cut through materials as thick as 2.44 mm thick.

Now that I have probably confused you along with myself, I decided to buy the Cricut Explore Air 2.  The Cricut Explore and Cricut Explore Air are not as readily available and thought I would splurge on the second to latest model. The wireless feature was worth the extra expense but I haven’t found myself dying to cut some balsa wood, make a quilt or even attempt to sew since the 7th grade….so the Cricut Maker will need to stay on my “wish list” for a little while.

Meet Dillar

Hey Everyone! I would like you to meet my friend, Dillar! We have been friends since First Grade, but lost touch when she moved away and we both got inundated in raising children. In recent years, we have become reacquainted only to find out how much we have in common, how much we both love to entertain and take care of family and home and most of all, how much we love to laugh. Dillar's laugh is contagious and she is one of the most generous people I know.

Recently, she travelled 663 miles to help her friend (me) get our lake house ready for a family reunion.  That's just the kind of person she is!  I tried to tell her not to come!  It was during that time that she just kept coming up with idea after idea, and finally, I said, "You should write a book and call it, 'Dillar's Great Ideas!'"  Thus, the column "Tipping Over With Ideas" was born!  I know you will enjoy her tips and "great ideas" as much as I have!
