• Week 5 - Shooting Par and Lessons Along the Way

February 26, 2020

I finished my first segment of FASTer Way to Fat Loss, and I wanted to share my successes and lessons. It was a six-week session, with the first week being a "prep" week of eating whole foods in the framework of a 16/8 fasting schedule. The next five weeks included planning of each day's macronutrients (fat, protein and carbs) using the My Fitness Pal app.

I lost 12 pounds and many inches. I am able to fit in some clothes that were too tight before. Even better, I feel so different, more energy and not bloated anymore. Because of this new found confidence I decided at the last minute before a trip to Phoenix, to bring my golf clubs. I had not touched a club since my shoulder surgery in December of 2017. During one of my visits with my surgeon, I had asked if he thought I would ever play golf again with the new plate and eight screws in my shoulder. He replied,"You probably won't be able to play well."

Uh, I believe I proved him wrong over Presidents' Weekend when I got through 12 holes of golf, pain-free with a few pars in the mix! I would call that not only successful, but playing golf well - especially for the first time out since surgery.

Here with my son, Wesley, who had a 3 handicap last year and was shocked I could hit the ball during our game over Presidents' Weekend!

I owe much of my success to an incredibly knowledgeable and positive physical therapist, Matt Stensrud from Midwest Orthopaedics PA Physical Therapy. He patiently worked with me for a year and a half and never gave up on me.  The surgeon had said I had a year to improve my range of motion, mobility and strength, and after that, there was no more possibility of improvement. Matt, however, said he had seen improvement in other patients months after a year's time since surgery.  I went with Matt's opinion and continued therapy for a year and six months.

It all paid off, but I honestly think that without the weight loss, I may not have felt good enough to even play golf.  I have more energy and more confidence in myself to do things I would not have tried before.

A round of golf may not seem like a milestone to some, but to someone who has gone from 0 degrees of range of motion to 96 degrees, it is huge.  I can't explain how physically painful the whole process was, so to be without pain and to actually play well, is a triumph! Lesson learned? Never say never!  Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. With perseverance and determination, you can achieve!!!

Another lesson I learned during the five weeks happened last night when we met friends for dinner and drinks. I had eaten clean all day and at dinner that evening, but I made a bad decision to have after dinner drinks.  I hadn't planned the day and written my foods into My Fitness Pal.  I just flew by the seat of my pants, guessing about what my macronutrients were totaling.

It wasn't worth it, and now I know, I can't just guess, especially when going out with friends.  But you know what? Sometimes life happens. The day had been stressful, and I was worn down. Part of becoming who we were meant to be, even when it comes to eating healthy and losing weight, is forgiving ourselves.

The mantra for FASTer Way to Fat Loss is:  "Progess over perfection."  I love that phrase, because no one in the world is going to eat perfectly every day.  We all have bad days and days where we make bad decisions, but that doesn't make us unsuccessful.

I am now continuing the FASTer Way in the VIP program since the six-week program is done.  I am part of a new facebook group and I still have the app and access to daily workouts. I'm so excited to see where this next step takes me!
